Contain the Rain and save the drains!

Climate change is leading to drier summers and wetter winters.

In some parts of the UK, demand for water may outstrip supply in just 20 years. Government bodies have warned that the UK needs to prepare for more regular water shortages.

But heavy rainfall also means that flooding is more likely.

When rain falls onto a hard surface like roof tiles or concrete, it runs off and flows into the nearest drain. Our drains deal with both rainwater and sewage, and can quickly become overwhelmed during heavy rainfall. This can lead to flooding and sewage overflow, polluting rivers and ruining homes.

To prevent this happening, we need to slow the flow of rainwater into drains.

There are different ways to do this. Some of them involve large scale changes to our landscape, like replacing concrete with green spaces or more permeable paving. But there are also things we can do in our own homes and communities.
